		<description>Hi John,

I love Wednesbury&#039;s motto &#039;Arte, Marte, Vigore&#039; (By Skill, By Iron, By Energy) because not only is it wonderfully relevant and evocative but it is also quite unique compared to a lot of civic mottos.

However I could not use it in a flag design. Flags need to be bold and simple. When fluttering in the wind (probably quite high up in the air) it would be extremely difficult to make out any lettering let alone an entire word. This is why in British heraldry lettering and numbering is strongly avoided (the UK Flag Institute even writes this fact into its guidelines).

Hopefully that explains why a motto is great for the detailed medium that is a full coat of arms but not so suited to flags. If you have any thoughts about the flag then I&#039;d love to hear from you

Cheers
